It may only be the start of September, but in my eyes that is 100% Autumn. And I am so excited! Being able to wear a coat again is definitely the best thing about the colder weather, but the second best is berry lipsticks. Nothing says Autumn more than a good plum-toned lip and nail combo, but when it comes to lip crayons, should you splurge or save?
Splurge: MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Ruby £17.50
This is almost a lipstick (if it wasn't in crayon form, obviously) as it gives incredible pigmentation. It is a dark raspberry colour, which is purpley enough to be perfect for this time of year, but has a pink undertone which makes it super wearable and day-to-night appropriate. As the name suggests it has a very glossy, though not sticky, formula which when worn off leaves a gorgeous raspberry stain to the lips. If bold mattes are for you, then this definitely isn't, but it certainly packs a punch colour payoff-wise.

Since I bought this one back in December they seem to have been repackaged (maybe reformulated) and are now only £3.50! But anyway, I will review the one I have and definitely need to pick up some of the new ones soon. The formulation of these are incredible, hydrating and sheer-ish, the perfect mix of lipstick and lip balm. In terms of shade it is very similar to Ruby as it a pinky berry, which for me is a perfect day-time plum as it can be sheered out or built up. It feels really comfortable on the lips, and being glossy without being sticky makes it perfect for beauty junkies and bold lip newbies alike.
Save: Revlon Colourburst Balm Stain in Crush £7.99
The Revlon offering is the most vampy of them all as it is much deeper and darker. It is still a very wearable shade, don't get me wrong, but if you are looking for a 'proper' Autumn lip shade this is the one. Although not matte, it is noticeably less glossy than the other two, and can slightly emphasize dry patches - but nothing a good scrub can't fix. It has some serious lasting power for a lip crayon, and the stain it leaves is much more pigmented than the other two, but you can definitely feel it more.
This is a tough one for me as I genuinely love all three of these berry lip crayons, and I think they all serve different purposes. However, given that I would recommend them all equally, it has got to be save as you can get the same quality at a cheaper price.
